sharing the spirit of
Gemütlichkeit
Gemütlichkeit (ɡəˈmo͞otlikˌkīt) refers to a feeling of cosiness, contentedness, comfort and relaxation. It is difficult to translate in one word. It refers to an atmosphere, one surrounded by close friends, good food and drink while music plays in the background.
Anton’s Garden opened in the late Spring of 2019 in the tradition of German Biergartens to bring the spirit of Gemütlichkeit to Downtown Waterloo. Located in Newton’s Park we are a gathering spot for food, beer, and an atmosphere of community.

AN HOMAGE TO HERITAGE
Anton’s Story
Anton’s Garden is named after Anton Schroeder, my great grandfather, and a German immigrant to the United States. In 1852, Anton emigrated from Antwerp to Ottawa, Illinois where he married and raised my grandfather, John. John didn’t enjoy farm life and moved to Chicago where he made his own life with my Irish grandmother, Theresa Brophy.
I am proud of my German-Irish heritage and happy to celebrate both sides of that history. My great grandfather Anton was said to have “a love for the bier” and I know that trait has not diminished in the family since. Help me honor Anton’s Memory by enjoying the traditional Gemütlichkeit at Anton’s Garden in Downtown Waterloo.
